In February, the New York Times reported that as of the end of 2020, the number of transgender individuals enrolled in college had nearly doubled from 8,000 in 2013 to 12,500 in 2020.
The story also noted that the rate of transgender suicides is nearly twice the national average, with about 15 per 1,000 students.
The article noted that although the majority of the students who seek treatment for gender dysphoria are young adults, there are also students who are young and college age, who are transgender.
And, the Times noted that some of these young adults may be transitioning to a new gender identity, and others may have transitioned for other reasons.
While the numbers and demographics of transgender college students are certainly concerning, the issue of transgender youth suicide is much more complex than a national statistic, according to Caitlyn Jenner, who co-wrote the book, I Am Cait.
“The story is one of a young man who was bullied, physically and sexually assaulted by a high school basketball coach, who thought he could use his athletic prowess to seduce a girl,” Jenner wrote in a statement at the time.
“He was not alone.
This is the story of a transgender teenager who, through the bravery of others, was able to come out, and it is a story of hope for those around him.”
Transgender teens and adults have been known to attempt suicide in the U.S. for years, with a high number of reported incidents occurring within the first six months of transitioning.
Jenner, for example, wrote in the book that a young woman she knew in California was diagnosed with gender dysphoric disorder, and that she attempted suicide several times after coming out as transgender.
The same woman is the inspiration for the popular song “I Am Cait,” which was released earlier this year by the group Caitlyn, which is also named for Jenner’s former name.
“As Caitlyn told me, ‘You were born a girl.
But you’ve always known you were a boy,'” Jenner wrote.
“So, like a lot of trans people, I was able at first to see the difference between who I was and who I wanted to be.
But the next time I came out, I knew there was something missing.
I knew it was time to say goodbye to the man I loved, and to get to the place where I could be who I really wanted to become.'”
I Am Not Cait: Trans Lives in America by Caitlyn and Bruce Jenner is available for purchase from Amazon and Amazon.com, and the book is available to stream for free on Netflix.
