A student at the University of Illinois has been charged with sexual assault after allegedly groping and kissing his former classmate during a sexual encounter, police said.
The suspect, who was arrested on Thursday, is a graduate student at Wingate University, where he was a student of the same name, the Chicago Police Department said.
The university issued a statement late Thursday saying the university takes allegations of sexual assault very seriously.
It added that the student is being held on $1 million bond.
We are aware of the allegations and are cooperating fully with the criminal investigation.
Police said the incident occurred at a residence on the university’s campus in November.
Wingate released a statement to ABC News that it is “deeply concerned” by the charges.
“We take sexual assault extremely seriously and we have launched a comprehensive sexual assault response team to investigate this matter,” the statement said.
